Alice in Wonderland
Spring Recital

Leap down the rabbit hole and enter a wonderland of dance that will delight your imagination based on  Lewis Carroll's 1865 well-known children's book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.  With music from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Joby Talbot we will follow Alice into a world all her own! Performances are in Spring 2025 with open auditions in December 2024. Please see audition information below.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND RECITAL is Saturday, May 31 at Willard Middle School with a tech rehearsal Friday, May 30 at Willard Middle School. 

Featured and Additional Roles:

*All JPA students will be cast in the show and rehearse within their class times. These auditions are for ADDITIONAL roles that require additional rehearsal time. 

 

Alice- Committed, classically trained dancer with wonderful, clean Ballet technique, that must be also demonstrate Modern/Contemporary and Theatre styles at times. She must have consistent musicality and big expression with an ambience of both curiosity and innocence. Alice must have the ability to pick up and remember choreography quickly and draw us into the story while engaging the audience to take the journey to Wonderland with her. Alice must be available for several additional weekly rehearsal slots and have excellent initiative.

 

White Rabbit- Advanced Ballet dancer with the ability to execute a variety of large jumps, leaps and turns with expression. The White Rabbit is responsible for bringing the audience in Wonderland, guiding Alice through the story and is also her advocate. If dancing en pointe, must be able to execute hops en pointe. The White Rabbit has solos and makes appearances in several scenes. The White Rabbit must be available for multiple rehearsal slots. 

 

Queen of Hearts- The Queen of Hearts is an advanced Ballet dancer, preferably en pointe, who can also act over the top in a comical and intimidating way. The dictatorial role of the Queen of Hearts will mainly rehearse Friday evenings and must execute a high stage presence while maintaining beautiful and comical technique.

 

Cheshire Cat- The Cheshire Cat is an Acrobatic or Contemporary dancer with a debut solo and some additional appearances. Cheshire may also be cast a group of dancers as the cat appears and disappears. 

​

King of Hearts- The King of Hearts must be able to lift the Queen and dance in pas de deux OR must be physically small and able to execute huge body and language. Like the Queen, the King must also be able to hold comical expression and will rehearse mainly on Friday evenings.

 

Duchess- The Duchess is manic character who exercises both Musical Theatre and Ballet technique. At one moment, she is regal and lovely and the next a kin to Mrs. Lovett a la Sweeney Todd. The Duchess appears in a few different scenes that require some additional rehearsal but must be available Fridays 5:00-6:00 and sometimes later in the evening as well.

The Baker- The counterpart to the Duchess in the Baking scene. She should have over the top comical expression.

 

Caterpillar- The “head” caterpillar in a Modern dancer who can show an arrogant and wise demeanor while dancing. The caterpillar will have some slight additional rehearsal and must be available Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings.

 

Rose/Flower Solo(s) (*Lilly, *Daisy, *Daffodil) As the leader of the flowers this role has a special featured dance within the Garden of Flowers. This role requires some preliminary teaching time and then must be available for a Wednesday and/or Thursday evening timeslot..

 

Alice’s big sister- “Loreena” must be a beautiful ballet dancer with an elegant air. She must be taller or have the ability to be more mature looking than Alice available to rehearse the opening and closing scenes only. 

 

Tweedles- The Tweedles make a comic cameo. this duo will have light additional rehearsals and should be strong actors with good dance technique. 

 

Frog and Fish Footmen- The Frog and Fish Footmen must be excellent hoppers. We have the option to keep them in one scene or intertwine them in additional scenes depending on availability dependent on the needs of our final casting list. 

 

Knave of Hearts- Depending on casting, the  Knave must be able to dance with Alice as her counterpart, entering  the Queen of Hearts’ court. The knave requires light rehearsal and should be a similar stature to Alice OR the Red Queen. This role could also be a stand alone Ballet or Theatre role, stealing the Queen's tarts.

​

The Mad Hatter- A character who is the star of the tea party and doesn't need to make sense to others, only to himself.  Must be available from some Monday evening rehearsals as well as other scheduled rehearsals. In the Royal Opera House's production, the Mad Hatter is portrayed by Steven McRae and uses a lot of tap dancing. We will consider using different genres of dance for this role as well as...

​

The March Hare- Portrayed as an "absent-minded professor" type who enjoys celebrating UnBirthdays with his friend, Hatter.  Must be available from some Monday evening rehearsals as well as other scheduled rehearsals. 

​

The Dormouse- A character who attends the Mad Tea Party who is constantly falling asleep. Must be available from some Monday evening rehearsals as well as other scheduled rehearsals. 

​​

The following characters may also be cast depending on the show make up and scheduling: 

Mock Turtle, Gryphon, Lobsters and sea creatures, Dinah the cat, hedges, sea of tears, Caucus Racers, Big/Little Alice and more 

​

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13 at the nZone in Chantilly 

5:45 -6:15 Musical Theatre, all levels

6:15 -6:45 Ballet I -III

6:45 - 7:45 pm Ballet levels III through Advanced

or by director approval

7:45 - 8:15 pm Acro/Contmporary and Gymnastics

8:15 - 8:45 pm Intermediate -Advanced Pointe 

 

*Roles are dependent not only on skill but also schedule availability.

*Some roles and features will also be assigned within individual JPA classes. 

Tap features will be cast within classes.

​This brand new musical version of the timeless classic takes you down the rabbit hole with zany characters, mad tea parties, flamingo croquet on the lawn, and tap dancing playing cards.  This all in a land where nothing is as it seems. You'll meet the ever-curious Alice, the White Rabbit, Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum, the Mad Hatter, the Caterpillar, the Mock Turtle, the mysterious Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts, and all your favorites from Lewis Carroll's beloved books, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.  

This is a not to miss, magical, tuneful, and

over-the-top entertaining musical for the whole family!​
